A few words about palo santo... i.e. the sacred tree. This is the name given to a tree that has unusual properties, often called magical. During its growth, resin with a fascinating smell flows in this tree, but it also makes the tree resistant to external factors. The wood is so strong that it is commonly used to make vessels for drinking yerba mate, everyday objects and beads. Natural essential oils are also made from the resin, and then perfumes. However, Palo Santo is most famous for its wooden pieces, which we set on fire and, enjoying the smell, cleanse ourselves and the surroundings.
Important! Outside Peru, you can they can also be found in Mexico, Chile and the Galapagos Islands. Did you know that palo santo is made from dead trees? Some tree species are at risk of extinction, so they must not be cut down. Wood is obtained from naturally fallen, dead branches. It is not only an expression of respect for nature and a way to protect wild plant populations. Before the palo santo branches are harvested, they lie on the ground untouched for about 6 years - during which time the resin contained in them acquires even greater strength and aroma. They were once used for religious purposes by shamans, as well as in Catholic religious ceremonies. It was believed that the incensing ritual attracts good luck and helps get rid of bad energy from the environment. People were also incensed, which was supposed to guarantee health and well-being. The smell of palo santo is phenomenal, especially after lighting.
How to use palo santo? Light a piece of dry wood and let the smoke spread throughout the surroundings. Repeat the action several times. You can also place and light a piece of wood on a coal placed on a censer. Palo santo will smolder longer and more intensely. Very important! Do not leave burning wood unattended, in a place accessible to children or animals, or near flammable materials.
