Foam brain model (Learning Resources)

For whom?

The foam brain model is an educational aid for use in biology lessons. It can successfully enrich classes in primary school. It will be especially useful in older grades, where the topic of the structure of the brain and the functions of the right and left cerebral hemisphere are discussed. The foam model allows students to show a cross-section of this important organ. This will help illustrate the most important elements of the brain structure.

The model in the middle is colored, which makes it easier to distinguish individual elements. One of the cerebral hemispheres contains structures described in English. The cross-section of the second hemisphere shows letter markings. The aim is to use the tool to consolidate the acquired knowledge by trying to name the elements described with letters.

Such educational aid can be used by the teacher during lessons, but also when working in groups or pairs.

Why is it worth it?

  • Interesting biology lessons li>

The structure of the brain is a topic that is worth presenting to students using a foam model. This will not only allow you to name specific parts, but also show their location and size in relation to neighboring elements. The ability to see the model up close will make it easier for young people to remember the names of brain structures.

  • Combining anatomy learning with English exercises

Brain structures in one of the hemispheres are signed in English. While learning, you can also create a list of letters from the other hemisphere and make links to them in Polish on a piece of paper. When questioning each other, it is worth using the list you have created. Working in pairs, you can ask your friend what structure is marked with the letter A and immediately check the correctness of the answer. It is worth framing the next question differently: giving the Polish name and asking to find a given structure in the hemisphere with letter markings. The third stage may be to provide the name of the element in English, which will need to be found and indicated on the hemisphere with letters. There can be many combinations of such puzzles. It is important that during this time students consolidate the acquired knowledge in various ways.

  • Visual memory training

Learning using a model brain is a way of showing students the system of neurological structures in three dimensions. They are marked with a color and a description or letter. This will allow you to associate all these factors with the arrangement of a given element when remembering. Moreover, during the exercises, students will begin to associate descriptions in English with Polish nomenclature, which will also have a positive impact on their ability to remember.

What does it contain?

1. Two foam brain hemispheres (one with labeled elements in English and the other with structures marked with letters to test the student's knowledge). The following are marked:

  • frontal lobe
  • parietal lobe
  • temporal lobe
  • occipital lobe (occipital lobe)
  • hypothalamus (hypothalamus)
  • thalamus (thalamus)
  • cerebellum (cerebellum)
  • pons (pons)
  • corpus callosum (corpus callosum)
  • pituitary gland (pituitary gland)
  • medulla oblongata
