Inactive yeast is a species of yeast known as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This is the same type of yeast used in baking bread and brewing beer. Although brewer's yeast, baker's yeast and inactive yeast are technically made from the same species of yeast, they are very different products. Inactive yeast: This yeast is grown specifically for use as a food product. The yeast cells are killed during production and are not viable in the final product. They are used in cooking and have a cheesy, nutty or spicy flavor.
To produce inactive yeast flakes, S. cerevisiae cells are grown for several days in a sugar-rich medium such as molasses. The yeast is then deactivated by heating, harvested, washed, dried, crushed and packaged for distribution.
It is a versatile food that fits almost any type of diet and eating style. They are naturally almost sodium and calorie-free, as well as fat-free, sugar-free, gluten-free and vegan.
Inactive yeast flakes are rich in iron, which is involved in, among others, in the production of red blood cells. They also contain selenium, which helps repair cell damage, and zinc, which supports tissue repair, wound healing, and maintains the sense of taste and smell.
