What are omega-3 fatty acids?

OMEGA-3 acids is a common name for a group of compounds belonging to essential fatty acids (EFAs).

OMEGA-3 acids are…

ESSENTIAL – because, unlike saturated fatty acids, the body cannot produce them itself, but they are needed at many levels of its functioning. Therefore, they must be provided in appropriate amounts in food.

UNSATURATED – which means that the molecules of these acids contain at least one double bond between carbon atoms in the carbon chain. The suffix '3' means that the last such double bond is located at the third carbon atom from the end of the chain.

The three main OMEGA-3 acids that play the most important role in healthy eating are:

OMEGA-3 or OMEGA-6?

Providing both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is very important for the proper functioning of the body. However, it is important to maintain their appropriate ratio in the diet. The optimal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is 1:4.

In the diet of Western societies (European or American), this balance is significantly shifted towards excessive consumption of omega-6 fatty acids. This is because the main part of the diet are products of animal origin, in which saturated fatty acids predominate, as well as omega-6 fatty acids. 6. However, little fish, seafood and plant products (oils), which are a natural source of omega 3 acids, are consumed.

The consequence of this style of nutrition is a disruption of the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, which is 1:15 or even 1:20. The result of maintaining such a state for a longer period of time is the appearance of pro-inflammatory compounds in the body, resulting from excessive amounts of omega-6 acids.

The point is not to eliminate either fatty acids from your diet, but to eat a balanced diet, providing both omega-3 and omega-6 acids in a proportion as close to the optimal one as possible. Due to dietary habits rooted in our culture, it is much more difficult to maintain the supply of omega 3 fatty acids at an appropriate level than omega 6 fatty acids, which is why in many cases omega-3 fatty acid supplementation is recommended.


Triglycerides vs Esters

Omega fatty acids can be supplied to the body in various chemical forms - e.g. in free form, in the form of triglycerides or esters. The vast majority of fatty acids that are naturally found in food are in the form of triglycerides, which are part of fats, and to a small extent they are also present as free fatty acids. The triglyceride form is therefore the natural form of omega fatty acids.

On the market you can also find dietary supplements and medicinal products based on omega acids in the form of ethyl esters (esterified form). It is an artificial form of omega fatty acids, obtained by chemical synthesis, in which natural triglycerides are broken down into free fatty acids, and then, through a chemical esterification process, they are transformed into ethyl esters of appropriate fatty acids. Esterification of fatty acids is a solution commonly used in pharmacy, mainly due to the possibility of obtaining a raw material with precisely desired and repeatable parameters, and, consequently, easier use in complex technological processes as well as easier storage.

However, in daily supplementation it is better to use forms of omega fatty acids in the form of triglycerides, which are a natural ingredient found in the same form in food and therefore best recognized and tolerated by the body.
