The test is used to periodically check the effectiveness of the autoclave sterilization process, which is one of the most important activities protecting both employees and patients. It is required by the Sanitary Inspectorate and should be carried out quarterly and in other circumstances described below.

Properties and recommendations of the Sporal A test:

• A small paper indicator was soaked with a suspension of Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores, which is located in a sterile paper and foil package measuring 5 cm x 5 cm.
• To perform the test correctly, two unpacked indicators should be placed in the autoclave in a place that is difficult to access for the sterilizing agent (e.g. pressurized steam). Alternatively, the tests can be placed in two different toolkits.
• Sterilization takes place on any program (121°C or 134°C). It is recommended to use the most frequently used program.
• The third indicator is not sterilized, but is a control indicator and, together with the remaining indicators, is delivered to the laboratory for culture, culture and test determination.
• Indicators should be delivered to the laboratory no later than 24 hours after sterilization.
• The autoclave test should be performed at least quarterly. The test result is required by the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station during the inspection.
• Checks should also be carried out after the autoclave has been repaired or overhauled. Tests are also required when the autoclave shows abnormal operation.
• The recommendations also require Sporal A testing to be performed when the person operating the autoclave changes.

How to store the Sporal A test:

• Store the package with unused indicators in a dry, non-humid place.
• Do not open the small indicator contained in the sterile package. The opening takes place only in the laboratory.
• Destroyed, open indicators should be sterilized and then burned.
